Firewalls, Content Filtering, SPAM control:
- In the past, most business networks
had an "inside" and everything on the other side of the firewall was the Internet
and "outside". The task of the firewall was to keep the Internet "outside". Today's
networks are not so simple. An employee inserts a USB data drive into an "inside
" workstation. The data on the USB data drive came from "outside" the network. Instantly,
that workstation can become a threat to the entire network.
-
In another example, a malicious piece of software compromises a
workstation. Within hours, sensitive documents and data have been transferred through
the old style firewall to criminals on the Internet. Bank accounts are emptied.
Credit Lines are maxed out. Company Confidential information, trade secrets and
intellectual property is published on Internet sites. Today's firewalls must be
as diligent at keeping the "inside" inside as well as keeping the "outside" on the
outside.
- SPAM - universally reviled in all
venues, is a huge drain on productivity and network capacity which equates to lost
revenues. Controlling SPAM is necessary for three reasons: SPAM frequently is the
source of trojans, virus infections, spyware, adware, malware, keystroke loggers,
etc.; SPAM requires intervention to identify it, delete it, and, over time, the
amount of time to perform these simple activities accumulates in to hours, days,
weeks of lost productivity.; SPAM sucks the life out of Internet connections, Server
resources, and network performance. SPAM is expensive and it is usually the case
that controlling SPAM is far less expensive and less risky than doing nothing.
-
Employees using company resources
to "Surf" can be a huge cost both in lost time, lost network resources and can be
the source of litigation. that are wasted. Content filtering can control access to porn and other
inappropriate content.
